What was the last trip you went on with the vehicle?

I completed the Pan American Highway in the Spring of 2023 and have been roaming Asia since October 2023, traveling through Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. I am currently in Thailand and plan to continue through Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and East Timor before eventually arriving in Australia.

Best memory with the vehicle?

It is hard to say I have a “best” memory, as I have so many great memories. I guess reaching Ushuaia, Argentina, the bottom of South America was an accomplishment and milestone I won’t forget. However, driving Death Road, roaming at 16,000+ feet, crossing the Salar de Uyuni salt flats and now roaming the mountains and jungles of SE Asia are all incredible experiences in themselves. It was also incredibly special and unique to return GWR to her birthplace in Japan at the global Land Cruiser factory in Toyota City, Aichi. She was well received and garnered a lot of attention as the only US Land Cruiser to return, per management. They were incredibly curious about all the customization.

What do you like most about the vehicle?

GWR was built to serve my specific needs and Walt and his team at Tactical Application Vehicles (TAV) did a great job taking my concept and mission specific design requests and matching up the best components available to build me an incredibly safe, reliable and easily repaired vehicle as I travel around the world. It is not built to be a weekend camp vehicle, but rather something that can safely get me front point A to point B, get me out of any sticky situations I might encounter and provide me safe haven if I need to camp out in the vehicle, all while being able to be easily shipped around the globe. It is a very capable, rugged and complex machine, but it is also so basic and simple compared to a lot of overland builds. It is perfect for my current form of travel.

Future plans for the vehicle?

I will continue my journey through Asia and eventually down to Australia where I intend to loop and cross the continent. After that it will likely return to the US for a break, get another refresh at TAV and I expect, eventually find its way to Europe and potentially parts of Africa at some point. I made some upgrades to the truck upon completion of the Pan American Highway, but so far through my Asia travels I have not identified the need for any major changes when it returns to the US other than giving it the TLC it deserves after delivering me safely through the Asia and Australian.

Where can people follow your build and adventures?

My travels can be found on Instagram @greatwhiteroamer, where I tend to “blog” a little bit, thinking one day perhaps I’ll have a grandchild who can read about grandpa’s travels in GWR. In the meantime, I am amazed at how many people seem to enjoy coming along for the journey as diligent followers of my Instagram feed.
